Undead

The undead are, in essence, no longer of the living. There is no such thing as a half or part undead, as one that is not dead is still alive. In such the daily needs of a living being, food, air, water, etc, do not apply to the undead. Even extreme temperatures do not affect the undead as they would the living. This strength, however, comes with it's own weaknesses. Some undead are fragile and decaying, while others require substance from the living in the form of flesh or blood in order to maintain their very existence. Undead are also often, but not always, color blind and are completely unable to reproduce via natural means (ie. no undead pregnancy). It is possible for a character that is living to become one of the undead via roleplay but in doing so they loose the strengths and weaknesses of their original race and gain those of the dead.

Creation Story

Often when one loses a loved one, be it through war, illness or just age, it is thought that they were taken too soon. To right this perceived injustice many often prayed to the only god they knew would listen, Compassion. Compassion felt for them as one by one they asked for a life to be restored. It wouldn’t take long for Death to notice and grow angry that souls selected to bring on into the next life were stopped and held back. Death turned to Harvest, thinking of no one better to help collect the souls back to where they belonged, who bestowed Death with a scythe to reap the stolen souls. Word of this traveled to Compassion, who approached Harvest, begging the god of the Reaping to take back the scythe. Harvest did not agree but did come to a compromise. The souls that should have moved on to Death's domain could remain in their bodies but they would not be as they once were. The bodies themselves would not be self sustaining, some falling to decay, some cursed to seek living sustenance and in that hunting blood and other particulars to keep themselves from entering Death's grasp. Compassion failed to see the compromise as completely good, a curse disguised in agreement, but would find out too late to reverse.

Place in the World

The Undead often find it hard to live in society due to their failing bodies which sometimes produce unpleasant appearances or odors. Others, such as vampires, are unable to be out during certain parts of the day and thus their activities are restricted to night-time hours though during those hours are more able to pass as living. When the more unsightly undead do come into Lu'mina Prominence they tend to stick to Port Valcos and Dawn's End as the population there is a little more tolerant than that of the higher classes. Still others take to ancient graveyards as sanctuary away from the living. Views on the living vary among individuals from jealousy to hatred and anywhere in between.
